Tasting Notes
- Upon opening the bottle, your senses will be enticed by the aroma of cucumber, melon rind, and tropical fruits. As for the flavor, you can expect distinct notes of green plantain, papaya, and black pepper.
The production occurs in Mazatln, Guerrero, located in southwest Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. The area is at an elevation of 1,153 meters above sea level, with a maximum temperature of 39.4C, an average of 23.5C, and a minimum of 6.7C. The region receives about 953mm of rainfall annually.
The production unit, known as the ‘Fbrica’ in Guerrero, is a shared facility where the Obregn family performs their artisanal mezcal production. Each family member has their alembic within the roasting pit. Despite being a shared facility, the yearly production does not exceed around 12,000 liters, maintaining the exclusivity and quality of the product.
The production process for the Maguey ‘Ancho’ mezcal is meticulously crafted. The process begins with cooking the agave in a roasting pit, then milling it using a mechanical grinder. The milled agave is then fermented in oak wood vats and distilled in a traditional copper alembic.
The agave used in this mezcal is the Agave cupreata, which is typical for mezcal production in the Balsas River basin, including both Guerrero and Michoacn. The agave, harvested from wild populations as well as plantations, yields around 1 liter of mezcal for every 15-20 kilograms, and it reaches maturity in about 7 to 15 years.
