A rare treasure from the Miathuatln District of Oaxaca, this exceptional Madrecuixe (A. Karwinskii) mezcal showcases the mastery of Felipe Cortes, a mezcalero with nearly 60 years of experience. Distilled in March 2015 and patiently rested in glass for over seven years, this spirit embodies the rich traditions of one of Mexico’s most celebrated mezcal regions.
CRAFTING PROCESS
- Traditional roasting using native woods: Encino, Yegareche (Quercus spp.), Mesquite (Prosopis spp.), and Palo de Aguila (Alnus acuminate)
- Milling by ox-drawn tahona
- Natural fermentation in open-air sabino (Taxodium mucronatum) tinas for 3-8 days
- Double distillation in copper alambiques with refrescadera, featuring one water change during the process
TASTING NOTES
- Nose: Overripe bananas and wet stone, revealing classic Miathuatln terroir
- Palate: Incredibly creamy texture, complemented by fresh mango and hints of tajn spice
- Finish: Extraordinarily long-lasting with persistent creamy notes
HERITAGE
This mezcal represents the artistry of the Cortes family, now in its third and fourth generations, with Felipe and his son Ageo. Based in Mengoli de Morelos Miathuatln, Oaxaca, they continue a family legacy deeply intertwined with the region’s rich mezcal tradition. Their connection to the area’s mezcal heritage extends through marriage to the renowned Ramos family, creating a powerful union of mezcal expertise.
